The role establishes standards, supports project and event teams, provides specialist advice, monitors implementation and ensures significant risks, incidents and compliance issues are visible to leadership.

Operational managers remain accountable for implementing required controls in their teams and work areas.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

  1. H&S Management Framework
    • Develop and maintain practical H&S policies, standards, templates and minimum controls appropriate to Sport Signage activities.
    • Ensure arrangements cover office/warehouse activity, transport interfaces, event installation, off-track build, compound activity and contractor use.
    • Keep requirements understandable and usable by operational teams.
  2. Risk Assessment & Methodology Governance
    • Establish standards for risk assessments, method statements/RAMS and related event safety documentation.
    • Support teams with higher-risk or unusual activities and challenge inadequate controls.
    • Maintain clear review/approval requirements without taking over routine operational planning.
  3. Event & Project Support
    • Review significant event risks and support Operations Managers during planning and delivery.
    • Attend selected events based on risk, complexity or client requirement.
    • Provide specialist guidance where site conditions or scope changes affect safe delivery.
  4. Audits, Inspections & Assurance
    • Plan proportionate audits and site inspections.
    • Record findings, assign actions and follow through to closure.
    • Identify recurring systemic weaknesses across teams and events.
  5. Incident & Near-Miss Management
    • Maintain a consistent reporting process for incidents, near misses and significant hazards.
    • Support or lead investigations appropriate to severity and ensure corrective actions address root causes.
    • Escalate serious matters promptly to the appropriate leadership level.
  6. Training & Competence
    • Define key H&S competence/training requirements relevant to roles and activities.
    • Maintain oversight of completion/expiry information in coordination with HR/Operations where systems allow.
    • Support briefings, toolbox-talk standards and targeted training.
  7. Contractor & Supplier Safety
    • Set expectations for relevant contractors and specialist suppliers.
    • Review H&S information proportionate to the risk of outsourced activity.
    • Support Procurement/Operations in addressing poor contractor safety performance.
  8. Compliance & Records
    • Maintain organised records of relevant H&S documentation, actions, incidents and assurance activity.
    • Monitor applicable requirements with support from external specialists where legal interpretation is needed.
    • Ensure client/venue compliance requirements are captured and communicated.
  9. Safety Culture & Leadership Advice
    • Provide clear, practical advice to leadership and managers.
    • Encourage early reporting of hazards and stop-work decisions without creating a blame culture.
    • Challenge unsafe shortcuts, including where programme or cost pressure is high.
  10. Continuous Improvement
    • Use audit, incident and event data to identify trends and priority improvements.
    • Track actions and report meaningful risk/H&S performance to leadership.
    • Update standards based on lessons learned and changes in the operating model.

THE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU NEED:

  • Professional experience in health & safety, operational risk or compliance within events, construction, temporary works, manufacturing or comparable environments.
  • Strong practical understanding of site-based work, plant, work at height, lifting and contractor environments.
  • Experience with incident investigation, risk assessment and H&S assurance.
  • Ability to influence operational teams without relying solely on formal authority.
  • International event/motorsport experience is advantageous.
  • Relevant professional H&S qualification should be defined by HR based on applicable legal/company requirements.
  • Risk assessment and H&S systems.
  • Practical site inspection and assurance.
  • Incident investigation and corrective action.
  • Clear written safety documentation.
  • Training/coaching and influencing.
  • Data/trend analysis and senior escalation.
